In A.D. Rome, people believed that if several witnesses at a wedding were dressed exactly like the bride and groom, any uninvited, spiteful spirits would be too confused to cause much trouble. That ritual remains somewhat true today, as bridesmaids and groomsmen often costume themselves to look like the bride and groom with similar tuxedos and gowns. In reality, however, it is not done as an act of protection, but to add glamour to the once-in-a-lifetime event.

Bridesmaids, in particular, seem to follow the bride very closely in their wedding-day jewelry. Their matching necklaces or earrings are often a gift from the bride and complement, but not mirror, what the bride will wear on the wedding day.
