The eating, drinking, socializing and dancing all have to happen in this one place, so it makes sense to try and visualize it, to ensure that there is enough space without people becoming too cramped.

You need to ensure that there are catering facilities, electric hook ups and back up equipment available. You need to make sure that there is sufficient lighting for the photographer, and if you are holding your reception outside, it is necessary to have a back up plan in case of inclement weather.
